Praise for Steve Allen

When writing for magazines I got a number of letters. They, invariably were not singing my high praises but telling me how they related to the subject matter or the person interviewed in the piece.

The remembrance I wrote for TV GUIDE about Steve Allen, his influence on my childhood, with all those great antics he pulled off on the Tonight Show, brought numerous letters.

The magazine forwarded the reactions and there was one that was a classic. It came written in pencil from a woman in Brooklyn on a little greeting card featuring a Poodle. The copy was wonderful, over the top, praising my old hero Steve (and deservedly so) for his wit, his brain, his good looks, his talents as a pianist and composer.

The first panel of the Poodle card, with these accolades, closed with “…and Jayne Meadows….

My thinking of course now it’s not just praise for Steve it’s his beautiful wife.  So, I flipped to the back panel of the card and read…”…what he ever saw in that bitch I’ll never know!”

I regretted that I never sent him that as I can just hear Steve and Jayne howling with laughter.
