Pick A Winner

While working at NC State University I found my niche in marketing and during those years I developed a number of programs to bring attention to that fine old land-grant university. I wrote everything from halftime spots for athletic events to public TV programs to plays to statewide outdoor marketing. Someone in one of the business programs must’ve heard about my efforts because they sent a young woman student to my office in hopes I might give her some marketing tips.

Dressed for success and equipped with a pen and note pad, she was hanging on my every word, asking excellent questions and frankly sharing some ideas that were rather impressive.

When this successful encounter wound down, she gathered up her notebook, and pen and thanking me profusely exited by saying, “Mr. Cairns that was very helpful. I would very much like to come  back again sometime and pick your ear!”

All I could think of was that poor child exiting the building and knowing it would be for the last time.
